The Shopping Bag
Walter H. Deubner ran a small grocery store in St. Paul, Minnesota, and he was looking for a way to give his business a boost. He noticed that his customer’s purchases were limited by what they could conveniently carry. So he set about devising a way to help them buy more. It took him four years to develop the right solution: a prefabricated package, inexpensive, easy to use and strong enough to carry up to seventy-five pounds worth of groceries. Deubber patented his product and within three years, by 1915, was selling over a million shopping bags a year. |
The Paper Towel
Arthur Scott, head of a paper products company, had big trouble. An entire railroad car full of paper, unloaded at his plant, wasn’t good for anything. Undaunted, he took a cue from a certain teacher in the city school who gave her runny-nosed students a small piece of soft paper to use. Scott turned the “dumped” papers into small towel-size sheets and sold them as disposable paper towels. Later he renamed the product Sani-Towel and sold them to hotels, restaurants, and railroad stations for use in public washrooms. |
The Post-it Note
Authrur Fry conceived the now can’t-do-without-them “post-it Notes” in 1974 after making sticky bookmarks for his hymnbooks, using a week glue developed by a 3M- research chemist, spencer silver. By the time Post-it Notes went on sale in 1980, the product had evolved from a sticky bookmark to a temporary note after it became clear that employees couldn’t stop themselves writing on the prototypes. |
